Polly Stirzaker
Ceilidh Caller
What does a caller do?
Picks some fun dances to suit your audience and gives them a walkthrough so everyone has a chance to practice. Once the music starts the caller keeps shouting out what to do next until everyone is dancing happily.
What’s my style?
I’m energetic, cheerful and informal. My aim is that people enjoy themselves. Getting the dances right isn’t important, making mistakes adds to the fun. I’m keen to help everyone to join in if they want to, and I enjoy adapting things to suit people with a range of abilities.
I usually choose easy, fun, English ceilidh dances which are quick to learn and suit everyone. I can adapt the plan to add a Scottish flavour, or make the dances a bit more challenging for more experienced audiences. I call using gender free terms.
I like to discuss your ideas for the party beforehand to make sure I am a good fit for you.
About Me
I have enjoyed ceilidh dancing since I was a child, and I have played for ceilidhs for years in various bands. Now I am calling regularly for village hall events, birthday parties, and weddings, local dance clubs and branching out into folk festivals including Folk in the Orchard, Upton Upon Severn and Broadstairs. I get a big buzz out of getting people dancing. It is important to me that the dancefloor is welcoming for everyone, whatever their ability.
I play melodeon, whistles and Northumbrian bagpipes, play in a folk band called Cobblers Child, play for Morris dancing sides Lassington Oak Morris Men and Fern Ticket Morris. I run a steady speed session for people who want to learn how to play along in pub sessions.
